Public Education and Involvement

Salmon swimming upriverSurface Water Utility programs protect the water quality of the City’s streams, lakes, rivers and wetlands by reducing the discharge of pollution from stormwater runoff, which protects aquatic habitat as well as the beneficial uses (swimming, boating, fishing, aesthetics) of the water resources in the City for enjoyment by future generations.

Key surface water program elements that improve water quality include:

  • Public education and outreach
  • Public involvement and participation
  • Illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE)
  • Controlling runoff from new development, redevelopment, and construction sites
