In May 2005, Renton residents voted to ban fireworks within the city limits. The ban prohibits the personal discharge of fireworks year-round in the City of Renton.

The ban was in response to the fires and associated damages caused and designed to protect citizens and their property. Since the ban was enacted, there has been a marked decrease in the number of painful injuries and fires caused by fireworks since the ban was established.

It is considered a felony offense to sell, possess or discharge explosive devices, such as M-80s, M-100s, and homemade or modified fireworks.

Citations will also be issued. Fines for violations can range from $100 civil penalties to $500 criminal citations.

Renton Police work to enforce the ban, issue citations, and confiscate fireworks. Criminal and civil citations will be written depending on the offense. Call 425-235-2121 to report individuals discharging fireworks within city limits.

In 2022 a King County ban on the sales and use of consumer fireworks took effect. Personal fireworks are now no longer permitted in unincorporated King County, including Skyway and Fairwood.
