City of Renton mobilizes to ensure accurate count in 2020 Census

City was undercounted in 2010 and lost federal aid for vital human services projects

RENTON, WA ¬ The 2020 United States Census is fast approaching and the City of Renton is taking steps to make certain an accurate count of residents is made.

“We are pleased to launch the Renton Complete Count Committee,” said Mayor Armondo Pavone. “We realize that some of our residents have real concerns and fears about the Census. We are taking several steps to alleviate those fears, including recruiting trusted messengers to serve on the committee to help achieve a complete count in the 2020 Census.”

The committee will be composed of community members who will use their expertise, knowledge, and standing in their community to develop the most effective means of communicating the importance of the census. The committee will meet for the first time on January 21.

City of Renton Census 2020 LogoTo help residents recognize the outreach efforts, the city has created a 2020 Census logo. The logo contains 10 spokes, representing the city’s theme of “10-10-10” or “10 questions, 10 minutes, 10 years.” The design is based on the census form containing 10 basic questions, which take less than 10 minutes to answer, and the results having an impact on Renton for the next 10 years. The logo also contains the phrase “Renton Counts!” emphasizing the need for all sections of the community to get involved with the census.

Research has shown that for every 100 households who are not counted in Washington in 2020, the state will miss out on approximately $5.8 million in federal aid—aid  that funds school lunch programs, low- and middle-income housing projects, transportation projects, Head Start, Medicare and Medicaid to name a few.

Renton residents will receive information on how to complete the census in mid-March. Census responses can be made online, by phone or by mail in the postage-paid envelope. All data collected is protected by law and kept confidential.

The city has hired Ginna Hernandez to serve as a full-time census program manager through September 2020. If you’d like to be part of Renton’s census community outreach, please contact her at 425-430-7728 or [email protected]. More information on the 2020 Census can be found at rentonwa.gov/2020census.
