NE 31st Street Bridge Replacement Project

Contact Information

NE 31st Street Bridge spans over May Creek in the City of Renton. It serves as the only public access to several residences and May Creek Park. The existing bridge is nearly 70 years old and is classified as structurally deficient. In 2014, the City of Renton applied for  Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Bridge funds to design, acquire right-of-way and construct a new bridge. The City of Renton has been awarded $1.4 million in FHWA funding for the project.

Project location

Existing NE 31st Street Bridge:

The existing bridge was built in 1950. It is a two-span structure and each span consists of precast channel girders supported on timber pile caps. Each timber pile cap is supported on five timber piles. The center pier has two piles (middle and adjacent) that have severe rot, diminishing their ability to carry vertical loads. In 2014 temporary vertical supports were installed at the center pier to increase the load carrying capacity until the bridge could be replaced.

New NE 31st Street Bridge:

The new bridge will be a single span structure of 75 feet. The superstructure will consist of precast concrete voided slab girders. The girders will be set on two reinforced concrete abutments. The abutments will be founded on driven pile foundations.

Street Closure for Construction:

Since this project is replacing an existing bridge with a new bridge at the same location, NE 31st Street will be closed while the project is constructed.
