Virtual Permit Services Appointments

You can now book free virtual appointments to get direct assistance from City staff, who will be able to answer basic questions about the City of Renton zoning, building, and development requirements for permitting. Schedule a 15 minute meeting with City of Renton Permit Services staff from the Planning, Development Engineering, and Building teams.

Items to consider before scheduling a meeting:

  • This service is not intended to be a consultation with the reviewer of an existing permit. If that is the case, please contact the assigned reviewer directly with questions about the existing permit.
  • Meetings are intended to address basic high-level questions.
  • All appointments are conducted using Microsoft Teams.  You do not need to have the Microsoft Teams application to join a meeting.  A call-in option will be available on all appointments for customers who do not have access to a computer device.

For general information on zoning, land use and development regulations. Including planning questions related to:

  • Zoning
  • Lot coverage
  • Setback questions
  • Subdividing property and the process
  • Tree retention
  • Commercial signs
  • Information about critical areas

For general information on building construction applications. Including questions related to:

  • Is a building permit required?
  • Required information for building permit application
  • Documents required for building permit application
  • Assistance with how to electronically submit a permit

For general information with grading, or a project within the public right of way. Including questions related to:
  • Site work
  • Right of Way
    •  Curb, gutter or sidewalk replacements
    • Repair or replacement of driveways
  • Utility questions
    • Water, sewer, gas and electric lines 

Civic Access Self-Service Portal (Online Applications & Inspections)

The Civic Access Self-Service Portal is a way to:

  • Pay an invoice
  • Apply and receive an over-the-counter permit
  • Apply for Pre-Application Meeting
  • Apply for Permit Ready ADU Meeting

Building Permitting

The 2021 Construction Codes adoption has been extended and will go into effect on March 15, 2024. All permit applications submitted after March 15, 2024 must comply with the 2021 codes; complete applications received on or before March 14 will be vested to the 2018 codes. The 2023 NEC code will go into effect April 1, 2024.
