Equity Commission seeks applicants to fill youth vacancy

Applicants must be between 18-25 years of age at time of appointment

RENTON, WA - The city of Renton’s Equity Commission is accepting applications for a vacant youth position. The youth representative must be between 18-25 at the time of appointment.

Serving on the commission is an excellent opportunity to learn about equity and inclusion, local government, and the benefits of volunteerism. In addition, the commission needs the perspective of a youth member regarding the importance, need, and impact of providing access to equitable services and processes for children and young adults.

Youth members are eligible for community service hours.

The Renton Equity Commission comprises nine members, including this youth position. Members must live within the Renton city limits.

Members represent the city's diverse nature, including but not limited to ethnicity, race, age, gender, faith, gender identity and expression, and profession.

Commission members assist city staff in updating current practices, policies, and procedures based on their impact on equity and the community.

Commission recommendations will provide specific actions to resolve identified inequities. In addition, commission members will often analyze local and regional socio-economic data to discuss impacts and make recommendations on how the city can better meet the needs of our community.

The mayor appoints members to three-year terms or until the current term to which they are appointed expires.

The Renton Equity Commission meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are in person, but commissioners may attend remotely if needed.

Applications are on the city's website. All applications are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2023. The first review of applicants will take place on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023.

Serving on the committee is an excellent opportunity to learn about and influence human services and local government, in addition to experiencing the value of volunteering. The committee needs the perspective of a youth member regarding the importance, needs, and impacts of providing access to quality human services for children and young adults.

Youth members are eligible for community service hours.

HSAC assists city staff in developing policies that impact Renton residents. In addition, the mayor, Renton City Council, and staff consider the committee's evaluations and recommendations when allocating funding to programs and projects to meet the needs of our community.

The committee comprises 11 members who must live within the Renton city limits. The membership includes one youth member, who must be under 21. That position is also open. The individuals on the committee represent the city's diverse nature, including geography, gender, age, and ethnicity. The mayor appoints members to three-year terms or to fill the remainder of an existing term.
