First Mooncake Festival hosted by City of Renton
On September 29, more than 2,000 attendees joined the first annual Children’s Mooncake Festival at Renton Community Center
RENTON, WA (OCTOBER 26, 2023) – More than 2,000 attended the city’s first annual Children’s Mooncake Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival at the Renton Community Center.
Geared toward Renton’s Southeast Asian communities and youth, the event celebrated the nearly 25% of Renton residents who identify as Asian. The festival is celebrated in China and other Southeast Asian countries on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
The full moon is considered a symbol of reunion. It is a holiday that brings families together at harvest time, to rejoice in reunion, and to exchange wishes for good fortune.
Crafts for kids, traditional foods including mooncakes and macarons provided by downtown Renton confectioner Macadons, performances, and a movie about the holiday kept everyone entertained. Chinese lion dance opened the performances, followed by Cambodian dancers, a Shaolin Kung Fu demonstration, Vietnamese dancers, and a children’s lantern parade led by the Moon Goddess herself. Our thanks to the city’s Neighborhood Program, Parks and Recreation Department, local partners, performers, and all guests who participated in this annual festival.
