City of Renton Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Mayor, Council convene to proclaim September 15 to October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Renton

RENTON, WA (October 27, 2023) –  Mayor Armondo Pavone proclaimed September 15 - October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month in Renton this past week, recognizing Renton’s Hispanic population with a reception for local community leaders. Areesa Moroles-Bourdon, who serves on the Mayor's Inclusion Task Force and owns Renton's first Latina-owned State Farm Agency, accepted the proclamation.

Before the council meeting, a reception for local Hispanic community leaders celebrated the impact of Hispanic heritage here in the city of Renton.

Teresa Vazquez, Renton School District English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher at Highlands Elementary, and a leader in connecting Spanish-speaking families in Renton, spoke of the city’s tightly-knit Hispanic community: “Hispanic Heritage Month is not only a celebration of culture, it is also an opportunity to recognize the countless Hispanic individuals who have made remarkable achievements in Renton. From councilmembers, public servants, doctors, social workers, educators, interpreters, and artists.”

With 15% of Renton residents identifying as Hispanic and the city's Sister City relationship with Cuautla (Jalisco, Mexico), recognizing and celebrating this community that impacts the city's residents and businesses is significant.

Also in attendance was previous Citizen of the Year and recipient of the Key to the City, Ted Rodriguez. Locally-owned Hispanic restaurant Santa Fe provided refreshments, and local Hispanic-owned florist Cugini Florists provided the floral arrangements.
