Volunteers are an important asset to the Renton Police Department with over 30 community members working in almost every division.

In 1981, the first volunteers started performing vacation house checks, an important crime prevention program that is still active today. 

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to contribute to the quality of service the department provides to the community. It is important to be aware that volunteers represent the department and the city to our community.

Program Goals

  • Enhancing the department's ability to provide quality service

  • Maintaining a proactive working relationship with citizens

  • Preventing crime

  • Sharing the common goal of effective public safety

Volunteer Positions

  • Front Counter Support Volunteer: First point of contact for inquiries and reports from members of the public, face-to-face and by telephone.

  • Chaplain: Provide comfort designed to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of department personnel and their families, along with the victims and/or families the department serves within the community.

  • Records Clerk: Assist the Staff Services Division by maintaining files and records.

  • Fingerprint Technician: Provide fingerprinting to the public for employment and concealed pistol licenses.

  • Pawned Property Associate: Assist in locating and tracking stolen property through pawn shop activity.

  • Auto Theft Mapping Associate: Assist in tracking stolen car locations and recovery sites.

  • Special Events: Assist with special events such as National Night Out, Shred-A-Thon, and Renton River Days.

Volunteer Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

  • No criminal record and/or association with criminal activity

  • No prior felony, or serious misdemeanor, arrests or convictions

  • No recent history (last 10 years) of alcohol or drug addiction/abuse (including prescription drugs)

  • Have dependable transportation

  • Ability to commit to a minimum of four (4) hours a week

  • Ability to successfully complete the application and background process
