Those subject to B&O tax will see an increase beginning in 2023. There is no change to the annual taxable revenue threshold of $500K. More information can be found at rentonwa.gov/botax.

For revenue generated in 2022 and before, the old tax rates will be used.
For revenue generated in 2023 and after, the new tax rates will be used.

Tax Workshops

(Effective 1/1/2016)


The Renton B&O tax is a gross receipts tax. It is measured on the value of products, gross proceeds of sales or gross income businesses earn.

There are no deductions for labor, materials, rent, or other costs of doing business. If you do business in Renton, you must have a Renton business license and file a B&O tax return.

Businesses are subject to the B&O tax if the annual taxable revenue is above the following thresholds:

  • 2022 - $500,000
  • 2021 - $500,000
  • 2020 - $500,000
  • 2019 - $500,000
  • 2018 - $500,000
  • 2017 - $1.5 million
  • 2016 - $1.5 million

Until January 1, 2018, businesses under the threshold were also required to pay the per employee license fee. 

The Renton B&O tax is not the same as the Washington State B&O tax. Renton taxes must be filed separately from your state taxes.

Annual Tax Cap

The B&O Tax imposed shall not exceed more that the set cap limit (per business) which shall be adjusted each January to reflect the inflation adjustment. Below is the maximum tax for each respective year.

  • 2022 - $7,000,000.00
  • 2021 - $4,836,500.00
  • 2020 - $4,723,140.00
  • 2019 - $4,622,830.00
  • 2018 - $4,465,059.75
  • 2017 - $4,335,709.75
  • 2016 - $4,250,000.00
