In response to increasing thefts targeting Kia's and older key ignition Hyundai's, Hyundai & Kia Corporate have provided the Renton Police Department with a limited supply of steering wheel locks.
Only the following Hyundai models qualify for a FREE wheel lock: 2021 and OLDER with KEY IGNITION START ONLY. (If your Hyundai has a push-button start, it will already have an immobilizer. Hyundai-made engine immobilizers are standard in all new Hyundai vehicles at every trim level produced after November 1, 2021.)
Kia Corporate has placed no restrictions on who may have one of their donated wheel locks.
You MUST make an appointment first to pick up your steering wheel lock. Once your appointment has been confirmed, you will be asked to bring your qualifying vehicle registration to Renton City Hall upon pick-up. Only two locks, with two separate registrations, will be accommodated.

Purchase a steering wheel lock. These are available at some area retailers and online. If you own a Kia or Hyundai, please reach out to the dealership you purchased it from; some dealerships offer free steering wheel locks or other security options.

Install a security system for your car windows so an alarm will sound BEFORE a thief enters your vehicle.

Consider installing a kill switch; many vehicle parts and accessory stores offer various kill-switch options.

We understand that if a thief really wants to steal your vehicle, and it has a steering wheel lock on it, they can try to saw apart your steering wheel to remove it. The goal here is to make YOUR vehicle less convenient to steal due to the increased time and risk it would take to remove the wheel lock. We believe our community deserves this offer and are happy to partner with Hyundai America to bring this program to our City.
