Statement from Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone to Renton residents and businesses

“Rally supporters and protesters are trying to make a statement peacefully about a wrong that was committed last Monday. George Floyd did not deserve to die and racism is never an answer to anything and must stop. Violence and looting are never condoned by our Council or Renton Police. Peaceful protests are being drowned out by violent radical elements.

“Our law enforcement officers have indispensable and often dangerous jobs. The safety of our first responders is our top priority. I also hope that justice is served for Mr. Floyd’s death. I am personally committed to doing what I can to help stop racism and help our community survive and thrive.”

Throughout our country, concerned residents are gathering to recognize the tragic and unwarranted death of George Floyd. The City of Renton has welcomed these peaceful protests and we expect more in the coming days. These peaceful gatherings have in some cases been sabotaged by radicals taking advantage of a worthy message and creating fear and destruction. Renton police have gathered increased resources and plan to prevent such senseless chaos.

Residents may see an increased police presence in the city for the next few days and the reason is twofold. We want to respect and protect the rights of peaceful protestors to share their message safely while at the same time deterring criminal activity and maintaining the law. Our officers will be closely monitoring the city with a goal of keeping our residents and businesses safe while allowing people to safely express their right of free speech.

We anticipate that the City of Renton will impose a curfew tonight (June 1) starting at 8. The final time is dependent upon council action on the matter at tonight’s council meeting. This general curfew shall be enforced by the Renton Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

If you see something, please say something. Please call 911 in case of an emergency. We love our community and we will do everything we can to protect our residents and businesses and keep them safe.
