Statement from Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone

City of Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone has issued the following statement in response to the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.

“I would first like to express our continued condolences to the family of George Floyd.”

“For almost a year, our nation has been trying to create a shared belief in equality and proof of accountability in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Today’s guilty verdict on all counts against Derek Chauvin is an initial step in proving accountability in our justice system. While I support the court process and jury decision, I recognize there is still more work to be done to achieve a shared belief in equality.

“The City of Renton and Renton Police Department acknowledge the unfortunate but true history of racism and bias in law enforcement. We have a reputation as a regional leader of law enforcement services. We continue to create and encourage programs, policies and training that work toward eliminating race and bias in policing. These actions help build a shared belief in equality.”

“Today will no doubt be remembered by many for different reasons. I will remember today as proof of a working justice system and the affirmation of necessary change. Our work continues to ensure that the City and our communities can enjoy an inclusive city with equitable outcomes and ongoing support for all in social, economic, and racial justice.”
