COVID-19 Waste Preparation

Garbage

  • Bag all garbage including masks, facial tissues and items used for cleaning such as wipes, paper towels, and gloves.
  • Dispose of all cleaning and personal wipes in the garbage. Do not flush wipes, even if labeled “flushable”. All wipes clog sewers and cause backups. Do not compost wipes, even if labeled “compostable”. Wipes do not belong in your organics cart and are not approved by Cedar Grove.

Recycle

  • Continue to empty, clean, and dry recyclables before placing loose in your cart; do not bag recyclables.
  • Extra recyclables should be placed in containers next to curbside carts. Do not place recyclables in garbage bags or other plastic bags.

Organics

  • Continue to discard food scraps and yard waste in your organics cart.
  • Extra yard waste should be placed in containers next to curbside carts. Do not place yard waste in garbage bags or other plastic bags.

Household Hazardous Waste

  • Store sharps such as syringes and lancets in sharps safe containers for later disposal.
  • Collect hazardous waste such as cleaning products, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, fuels, oil-based paints, and vehicle fluids for proper disposal at drop off locations.
  • If possible, postpone trips to hazardous drop-off sites and follow these safety tips:
    • Keep hazardous products away from children and pets.
    • Keep hazardous products away from food items.
    • Keep hazardous products away from drains.
    • Keep hazardous products in original containers with a label.
    • Never mix products as some mixtures produce a poisonous gas.
  • For essential visits, Factoria, Auburn, South Seattle and North Seattle Household Hazardous Waste drop-off sites are open. Seattle facilities are operating on reduced hours. South Seattle is open Thursday-Saturday and North Seattle is open Sunday-Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Electronics Recycling

Electronic products contain valuable materials that can be recycled and toxic chemicals that should be kept out of the landfill.

E-Cycle Washington is a free program from the Department of Ecology that makes it easy for Washington residents to recycle their broken, obsolete or worn-out electronics.

Special Collections and Events 

Service Changes and Holds 

  • Businesses in operation may request service changes. A minimum level of service is required. To request a change, call Republic Services at 206-777-6440.

  • Businesses temporarily closed may request a temporary hold on their account. All changes and holds will be reinstated once the business opens. To request a change or hold, call Republic Services at 206-777-6440.

Solid Waste Utility Program

The City of Renton's Solid Waste Utility provides a responsible and robust solid waste program that includes:

Garbage service is mandatory per city code. All properties are required to have adequate service levels to prevent overflow of materials. The city partners with Republic Services to provide enhanced, cart-based and container-based recycling, organics (food and yard waste) and garbage collection; account management; and billing services. The comprehensive recycling and organics collection offered by Republic Services helps customers reduce the amount of garbage disposed at Cedar Hills Landfill annually. 

In the City of Renton, residential organics cart (gray) is collected every week while recycling cart (blue) and garbage cart (green) are collected every other week. Solid Waste Rates are based on garbage cart size. To keep garbage service cost low and to divert waste from the landfill, residents are encouraged to reduce waste and utilize organics and recycling carts for accepted items as much as possible. 

Inclement Weather

Road conditions, especially during the winter months, may impact recycling, organics and garbage collection routes in Renton. Hauler trucks are heavy and both the city and Republic Services are concerned with public safety.

If weather conditions prevent collection of recycling, organics or garbage carts, remove the carts from the curb at the end of the day and follow the guidelines below. Please follow container weight limits.

  • Recycling and garbage carts will be collected on Saturday immediately following the missed collection.
  • Organics cart will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day, the following week.

2023 Clean Sweep Program

Click to open PDFCity of Renton single family residential customers may schedule ONE collection of extra garbage to take place on their regular garbage day between March 1 and December 31, 2023 at no additional charge. Please review the Clean Sweep brochure for instructions on scheduling your collection and a list of other resources available for fixing, donating or recycling items. Whenever possible, repair, reuse or recycle items prior to disposal to conserve resources and reduce environmental impact. All items collected through this program will be disposed in the landfill.

Accepted Items:

  • Up to 10 units (32 gallons per unit) of garbage, each unit no longer than 3 feet on any side and not weighing more than 65 pounds. Extra garbage will be charged $4.38 per 15 gallons.

  • Plus, two bulky items such as mattresses, sofas or chairs.

Not Accepted Items:

  • Appliances (washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove, water heater, etc.)

  • Electronics

  • Recyclables

  • Yard waste

  • Liquid items

  • Hazardous items

  • Construction materials
