Integrating the Envision Framework into our infrastructure projects

The City of Renton Public Works Department is committed to building infrastructure that is not only functional and resilient, but also environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. To help achieve this, we have adopted the Envision Framework, a nationally recognized tool that guides sustainable infrastructure planning, design, and delivery.

What is the Envision Framework?

Envision is a framework managed by Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) that encourages systemic changes in the planning, design, and delivery of sustainable, resilient, and equitable civil infrastructure through education, training, and third-party project verification.

It was developed through a collaboration between ISI, which was founded by:

  • American Public Works Association (APWA)
  • American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
  • American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC)
  • The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design

Why it matters

Integrating Envision improves transparency, accountability, and value in public infrastructure. It ensures we design projects that:

  • Support Community Health and Resilience, including strategies for climate adaption
  • Protect Nature and Environment
  • Deliver Long-term Economic Value
  • Use Resource Responsibly
  • Plan for the Future

By integrating the framework, we are helping create a more sustainable and livable city for everyone.

How Envision Shapes Project Design and Development

Envision guides our project decisions from concept through construction and also encourages the team to plan for long-term maintenance, durability, and for when the infrastructure will eventually need to be replaced.  Its criteria influence design choices, material selection, and construction practices to maximize sustainability and resilience.  For our projects, this has meant:

  • Design Optimization: Identifying solutions that reduce environmental impact while improving performance and longevity.
  • Resilience Planning: Incorporating strategies that prepare infrastructure to withstand extreme weather and changing climate conditions.
  • Community Engagement: Ensuring projects meet local needs, enhance livability, and promote equity.
  • Performance Measurement: Using Envision's scoring system to track progress and verify sustainability outcomes.

By applying Envision, our projects are not only technically sound but are also socially responsible and environmentally conscious, creating long-term value for the community.
