Recovery is the process of helping people, businesses, and communities return to a new normal and move forward after a disaster. An emergency or disaster is not over when the initial response stops. Recovering after a disaster physically, financially, and emotionally can take months or years depending on the severity of the disaster. For many people after a disaster, life is never going to be the same.
Recovery actions may include repairing homes, restoring utilities, reopening businesses, and helping individuals and communities recover socially and emotionally. Recovery actions may not return a community to exactly the way it was before. It can be an opportunity to rebuild in ways that make the community safer and more resilient to future disasters.
There are steps impacted people can take to recover after an incident and create a new normal.
Recovery efforts may include connecting individuals, families, and businesses with available federal, state, local, and non-profit assistance and resources. After a disaster in Renton, recovery resources will be shared via the Current Emergency Information page.
