Our Renton newsletter for November 2025

As we transition from warmer days to colder and wetter conditions, Renton residents should prepare for the upcoming winter season. This year, our region is expected to experience a weak La Niña pattern, which typically brings wetter-than-average weather that can lead to flooding, icy roads, and other challenges.

Between September and October, Renton city departments collaborate on detailed winter preparation plans to ensure all staff and equipment are ready for whatever weather comes our way.

One key effort comes from the Public Works Department, which conducts an annual “dry run” to test-drive winter operations equipment. During these test drives, crews identify any changes to roads or new hazards.

By the numbers, the City of Renton is prepared with

  • 9 Sanders
  • 11 Trucks with Plows
  • 3 Anti-icer applicator trucks
  • 9,500 Gallons of De-icer
  • 700 Tons of Salt
  • 1,500 Tons of Sand
  • 350 Tons of Mixed Salt

Seasonal reminders for residents

  • Do not use generators or grills indoors if power goes out
  • If signals lose power, treat dark intersections as a four-way stop
  • Snowplows prioritize our major roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and fire stations
  • Neighborhoods are plowed once all snow and ice are clear from main arterials
  • Avoid parking or abandoning cars in the street during snow and ice events if you can
  • Businesses and residents are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks

Where to report issues

  • Power outages: Report to your utility company
  • Downed public trees: Report through Renton Responds at rentonwa.gov/rentonresponds
  • Downed wires: Call 9-1-1

Renton prepares for 2026 FIFA World Cup

With the 2026 World Cup coming to our region next summer, the city is making preparations for the many activities and visitors expected during this major international event.

First responders recently prepared with a joint exercise between the Renton Police Department, Renton Regional Fire Authority, Renton Parks & Recreation, other city divisions, and volunteers coordinated by Renton Emergency Management.

Together, procedures improved and we strengthened the emergency response coordination between city departments and partner agencies. Get an inside look at this event on the city’s YouTube page at rentonwa.gov/YouTube.

Construction for downtown’s Legacy Square is underway now! Legacy Square will provide a space to watch World Cup 2026 matches live and bring a new community space downtown with year-round activation.

Progress includes:

  • A majority of Phase 1 is complete. This includes utilities, lighting, driveways, sidewalks, and the resurfacing of the futsal court in partnership with the Sounders FC RAVE Foundation.
  • Phase 2 will begin soon. A grant from the State Department of Commerce will support the funding of construction to install the stage.
