Your career in law enforcement begins with Renton PD

There's no career quite like police work. Every shift brings new challenges, new faces, and new opportunities to make a real difference in people's lives. You'll protect the vulnerable, uphold the law, investigate crimes, and make judgment calls that matter, all while building a career you can be genuinely proud of.

At Renton PD, we're looking for the next generation of officers who are ready to answer that call. You don't need years of experience. You need the right values, the right character, and the drive to serve something greater than yourself.

Most entry-level officers worry about getting lost in a large department, waiting years for recognition, advancement, or a specialty assignment. Renton PD is different.

We're a full-service department with all the resources and specialty units of a major agency, but with a culture where new officers are known by name, mentored by experienced professionals, and given real opportunities to advance.

Add to that our commitment to best-in-class training and proper equipment, and you'll enter the field with the preparation and confidence to do the job right.

Plus, we're offering a $1,000 sign-on bonus for new hires. Your career and your future are worth investing in. So are you.

Hiring process

Joining the Renton Police Department is a serious commitment — and so is our hiring process. We hold our officers to the highest standards, so we take the time to get to know every candidate thoroughly before extending an offer. This isn't just a job application. It's the beginning of a career built on trust.

Here's what the full selection process looks like.

A process designed to find the best

When you apply for a position with Renton PD, you're entering a competitive selection process. Every candidate goes through the same comprehensive evaluation — because the community we serve deserves nothing less than officers of proven character, sound judgment, and demonstrated integrity.

Extensive background investigation

This is one of the most thorough steps in the process, and for good reason. We want to know who you are — not just on paper, but in life. The background investigation includes:

  • Polygraph examination: A standard tool for verifying the accuracy and honesty of your application
  • Credit history review: A financial responsibility reflects the kind of judgment we look for in our officers
  • At-home visit: A personal look at how you live and present yourself
  • Personal and employment references: The people who know you best will help us understand your character and work ethic
  • Interview with the Chief of Police: You'll sit down directly with the Chief for a conversation about your background, your values, and your vision for your career in law enforcement. This is your opportunity to demonstrate who you are and why you want to serve with Renton PD.
  • Psychological evaluation: Police work puts unique demands on the mind and spirit. This evaluation ensures that candidates are mentally and emotionally prepared for the realities of the job and for a long, healthy career in law enforcement.
  • Medical evaluation: A thorough physical examination confirms that you're fit for the full demands of duty. Your health and the safety of the people you'll serve depend on it.
  • Drug screening: Renton PD maintains a zero-tolerance standard. All candidates are required to pass drug screening as part of the pre-employment process.
  • Honesty is your most important asset: Throughout every stage of the process, the most important thing you can bring is complete honesty. Candidates are not disqualified simply for past mistakes, but dishonesty during the hiring process is disqualifying. Be straightforward, be thorough, and trust the process.

You're hired!

From day one, we've got you covered

Starting a career in law enforcement can feel like a leap into the unknown. At Renton PD, we make sure you're never taking that leap alone. From your first day at the academy to your first solo patrol and every year that follows, you'll have the training, support, and guidance to become the best officer you can be.

The Academy

Your journey begins at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, where you'll complete the 720-hour Basic Law Enforcement Academy, one of the most respected law enforcement training programs in the Pacific Northwest.

Over the course of the academy, you'll build the foundational skills, legal knowledge, and tactical preparation that every officer needs before stepping onto the streets. And while you're there, you'll be earning your full salary. No reduced pay. No financial stress. Just focus on your training.

Field Training

Graduating the academy is a major milestone, but your development doesn't stop there. After the academy, you'll be paired with an experienced Field Training Officer (FTO) for approximately 4.5 months of hands-on, real-world patrol training right here in Renton.

Your FTO will guide you through the transition from classroom to street, helping you apply what you've learned, sharpen your judgment, and build the confidence that comes from doing the job alongside someone who's been there. It's structured, supportive, and designed to set you up for success.

Continuous training throughout your career

At Renton PD, training doesn't end when field training does. Our officers receive ongoing monthly training throughout their entire career, keeping skills sharp, knowledge current, and officers prepared for whatever the job demands.

In a profession that evolves constantly, we believe that continuous learning isn't optional, it's what separates a good department from a great one. When you join Renton PD, you're committing to a career of growth. So are we.
