City contracts with two new fiber providers: Ziply & Ripple

Earlier this year, we signed contracts with both Ziply Fiber and Ripple Fiber to expand internet choices for Renton residents and businesses, making online access easier.

Both franchises are local to Washington and have been providing services to the region for the past several years.

What is Fiber?

Fiber internet sends data using light through tiny glass strands, instead of electricity through copper wires. Because light travels faster and doesn’t weaken as easily, fiber can deliver much higher speeds, often up to 10 gigabits per second, and it keeps those speeds steady for both downloading and uploading.

Why are we seeing more fiber options?

Fiber internet is a newer, faster way to bring high‑speed service to our community. As these companies expand, they partner with each city they hope to serve — which is why both providers are now looking to come to Renton. When a new utility arrives, we update our local code, processes, permits, and infrastructure to make sure everything works smoothly for residents.

We’ve heard loud and clear that people want more internet choices, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring new options to Renton.

The contract is just the beginning! Both providers are expected to begin servicing areas within Renton by the end of the year.
