SW 43rd Street paving project is underway

Last month, repaving began on SW 43rd Street from the western city limit to the SR 167 ramps, leaving the existing concrete sections in place.
SW 43rd Street has been an important east‑west roadway in South King County for many years, and it continues to play a major role in helping people and goods move through the region. Today, it’s a busy principal arterial with five to six travel lanes and carries about 30,000 vehicles each day. It also provides a direct connection into the Tukwila Regional Growth Center and serves as a designated T‑1 truck route, highlighting its importance for freight and local businesses.
The corridor links directly to SR 167 and offers convenient access to key destinations such as Valley Medical Center, IKEA, Costco Wholesale, and Southcenter Parkway. It also supports transit service throughout the area, including an all‑day route along E. Valley Highway and a Demand Area Response Transit (DART) route that connects Southcenter Parkway to the Fairwood neighborhood.
Resurfacing SW 43rd Street will help keep this well‑traveled roadway in good condition, extending its pavement life by 12 to 15 years.
These improvements will benefit everyone who relies on this vital east‑west connection between Tukwila, Renton, and Kent, whether they’re commuting, delivering goods, accessing services, or using transit.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
- Upgraded curb ramps for improved accessibility
- Refreshed lane striping and pavement markings
- Updated traffic signal detection
- Adjusted utility covers
- Drainage improvements will add new stormwater structures along the corridor and a new system at the Lind Avenue SW intersection to reduce standing water
All public and private properties impacted by construction activities will be restored as part of the project.
