Committee of the Whole Recap
Council received updates from both the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and the Renton Police Department.
The Renton Municipal Arts Commission (RMAC) supports:
- Public art initiatives
- Advises on cultural development
- Connects residents with creative opportunities
- Supports the arts grant program, and links artists and organizations to projects throughout the city
Guided by the Arts & Culture Master Plan, the commission focuses on three core goals:
- Creating opportunities for local artists
- Expanding community access through events, cultural programs, neighborhood activities, and community celebrations
- Increasing visibility of Renton’s arts community
During the presentation, commissioners highlighted the pivotal role arts play in strengthening the community. This includes contributions to the creative economy and their excitement to use Legacy Square for future arts and culture opportunities. They also discussed the impact of grant funding and shared examples of partnerships with community groups and city departments that continue to broaden and support the city’s growing arts scene.
Next, the Renton Police Department (RPD) opened the floor to allow the council to ask questions about the current Flock contract.
The existing contract expires in early November. An updated draft is underway to address concerns and ensure compliance with Senate Bill 6002. RPD confirmed that the automatic renewal clause was no longer active and the final contract will come back for council approval before the expiration date. Key compliance points include a 21‑day data retention limit and restrictions on data sharing with federal agencies. The council provided suggestions on what to add in the new contract, including messaging tailored specifically to Renton and detailing what equipment can be used and how.
The August 10 City Council meeting began with the audience comment portion of the meeting. The council heard several comments about ALPR cameras, preserving Tobin Street, legislation for use of public spaces, 500 Park Avenue, consideration of council districts, and progress on last week’s code compliance concern.
The meeting continued with several approved items out of the Finance Committee. Items included software agreements, property acquisition, equipment purchases, and project agreements with WSDOT for two projects within the Public Works Department.
The Arts & Culture Master Plan update was approved. The final plan will be up for adoption this fall.
The council then approved code updates for zoning regulations for the Valley Community Planning Area.
The council approved the Renton School District No. 403 Street Vacation at S. Tillicum St. and Alley, from Shattuck Ave. S. to Logan Ave. S.; and S. Tobin St. from Shattuck Ave. S. to Logan Ave S. A public hearing will be held next month.
Two motions were brought to the council but did not pass:
- Motion to direct the administration not to renew a contract with Flock
- Motion to direct the administration to unpause Flock cameras immediately
The next Renton City Council meeting will be held on Monday, August 17. Topics for discussion include an update on 2027/2028 proposed utility rates, an update on the Satori Elementary Safety Project, and the 2027-2032 Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program. This will be the last meeting before council takes their summer and holiday break. Council meetings will return on September 14.
