Committee of the Whole Recap
Council received an update from the Public Works Department on the 2027-2032 Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program.
The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is the city’s six‑year planning document that identifies transportation projects and programs needed to support city priorities.
This plan is required to be updated annually for state and federal transportation grants.
The department provided the council an update on this year’s TIP. Updates included:
- The project numbering reorganization
- Removal of completed or deprioritized projects
- Updated cost estimates
- Added detailed appendix listings for program projects (traffic safety, walkway program, etc.) to improve transparency
- Added 2027–2032 walkway program segments and several new capital projects
Funding status varies year‑to‑year based on grant awards, project milestones, and external partnerships. The TIP prioritizes funded or partially funded projects first, then unfunded candidate projects.
We continue to emphasize safety, sidewalks, and walkability, consistent with last year.
Through this program, several of these projects have been completed or are close to completion:
- Rainier Ave. Phase 4
- SW 43rd St
- Maplewood Sidewalk Project
- Slurry Seals
- Pedestrian improvements at Sartori Elementary
- Oakesdale Ave.
- Traffic Calming at SW 5th Pl & Aberdeen Ave. and SW Langston Rd
- 116th Ave SE Sidewalk project
New capital projects included in the TIP this cycle includes:
- Panther Creek Culvert & Roadway Replacement
- Talbot Road – Cleveland/Richards Park Sidewalk Project
- Southwest 7th Street Corridor Safety Project (Hardie Ave Cycle Track)
- Walkway Program adding segments of walkway at:
- SE 164th Street (Nelson Middle School to Lindbergh High School)
- Talbot Road (segment near Talbot Hill Elementary)
- NE 24th Street (Kennydale Lions Park)
- Aberdeen Ave NE (NE 28th to NE 12th)
The updated plan will be available for council approval during the next meeting.
The August 3 City Council meeting began with a proclamation recognizing Farmer’s Market Week.
During the audience comment portion of the meeting, the council heard several comments in support of the Renton School District Tobin Street vacation along with a concern, solid waste disposal options, ALPR cameras, a resident seeking help with a bear in their neighborhood, code compliance complaints, transparency about regional boards, committees, and meetings involving councilmembers.
The council approved the temporary full street closure at I-405 Houser Way North for one full week beginning August 7.
The council approved the Renton School District No. 403 Street Vacation at S. Tillicum St. and Alley, from Shattuck Ave. S. to Logan Ave. S.; and S. Tobin St. from Shattuck Ave. S. to Logan Ave S. for second and final reading during next week’s council meeting.
Two motions were approved by the council:
- Motion to cover all FLOCK ALPR cameras in the city.
- Motion to host a town hall meeting or orientation on FLOCK cameras for the Renton community.
The next Renton City Council meeting will be held on Monday, August 10. Topics for discussion include an update from the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and FLOCK contract.
