The Renton Police Department employs two full-time Animal Control officers to serve residents within Renton city limits. Learn more about their typical day in the video below.

What Animal Control Officers do

  • Investigate and enforce noise violations, such as barking dogs or other repetitive noises
  • Report on and quarantine biting animals
  • Pick up domestic animals in violation of the city's trespass ordinance
  • Enforce animal at large violations
  • Advise and educate community members on alternatives for nuisance cats or wildlife
  • Investigate animal cruelty complaints
  • Enforce the city's licensing requirements for dogs and cats
  • Take reports of lost/found domestic animals
  • Aid any sick or injured animal
  • Pick up any stray or deceased animal on the roadway

What Animal Control Officers do not handle

  • Issues outside the Renton city limits. King County residents (including unincorporated King County), contact King County Animal Control
  • Rodents or insect
  • Cats in trees

Finding a lost pet

To check if a lost animal within the city limits of Renton is in our care, go to the Animal Control Facebook page.

If the animal has identification such as an ID tag or microchip, attempts to contact the owner are made. Animals without identification are held for a minimum three-day holding period and then are put up for adoption according to health and temperament.

Please fill out the Lost/Found form to assist us in locating a pet or to help us to return an animal to its owner. You may attach a photo to the form as well. 

Foster homes

Renton Animal Control is seeking good foster homes. What is required to become a foster home?

  • Have a safe and caring environment for the animal
  • Have time to spend with the animal
  • Be able to attend trainings, bring animal in for medical care if necessary, and other transport as needed
  • Be willing and able to work with Renton Police Animal Control staff and volunteers
  • Be able to pass a background check

Free microchipping program

Do you have a pet and live in Renton? Is your pet microchipped? One way to help Renton Animal Control ensure your lost pet is quickly and safely returned home is through microchipping.  

Microchipping inserts a tiny chip into your pet. The chip can be scanned to access the owner's information and reunite residents with their lost dog or cat.  

In partnership with the Renton Community Foundation and Eastside Veterinary Associates, free microchipping services are available for Renton pets. This service normally costs around $70 per animal. Renton residents can visit Eastside Veterinary Associates, 1700 NE 44th St., Monday through Friday.   

Check-in is 11:30 a.m. No appointment is necessary. Proof of Renton residency via a driver's license or utility bill is required during service.

Animal Adoption

Animals in the custody of Renton Animal Control are generally reunited with their owners or, if an owner cannot be identified, taken to an animal shelter for future adoption. There are times when we have animals that are not able to be placed in a shelter. We are looking for community members who are willing to adopt these animals into their homes.

Animals adopted directly from Renton Animal Control will be screened by a veterinarian, chipped and spayed or neutered. You will also receive a voucher from Eastside Veterinarian Associates for an animal checkup to be completed within 30 days after adoption.
