Fire Hydrant Art

The South Renton neighborhood, including downtown, has been adding curb appeal in some unexpected places through the Fire Hydrant Art Program. Over the years, community artists have “adopted” fire hydrants and transformed these everyday objects into colorful, imaginative works of public art that surprise and delight passersby.

Unlike other public art projects on street signs or utility boxes, hydrants present a unique creative challenge, with curves, angles, caps, and hardware that artists thoughtfully incorporate into their designs. The result is a collection of playful and distinctive pieces that help bring personality and creativity into the public realm.

While the program is not currently fully open on a regular basis, future opportunities may become available as locations are identified and maintenance needs arise. Interested artists are encouraged to review the program guidelines and application materials to be considered for future projects.

Get Involved

The program has encouraged artists to draw inspiration from the surrounding community, history, and character of the area, with no set theme guiding the work.

What began as a small effort has grown over time as interest increased, expanding beyond the original 20 hydrants and continuing as long as there are hydrants, and artists, to participate. Selected artists received a stipend per hydrant to support materials and design costs and were welcome to submit multiple concepts.

While funding is not guaranteed at this time, the application remains open for interested artists to submit their ideas. Artists are encouraged to review the program information and stay connected for future announcements.
