RENTON, WA (MAY 15, 2025) – City of Renton Councilmember Ryan McIrvin has earned an Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership (CML) from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC).
Auburn Mayor and District 13 Representative for the Association of Washington Cities Nancy Backus and Councilmember Ed Prince presented the award at Monday night's Renton City Council meeting.
"To receive the advanced CML takes quite a bit of work and dedication on the part of an elected official. I am honored to be here today to congratulate Councilmember McIrvin for his work and his dedication to ensure that he has that advanced CML,” stated Auburn Mayor Backus.
AWC’s Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in five core areas:
- Roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements
- Public sector resource management
- Community planning and development
- Effective local leadership
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion
Councilmember McIrvin was awarded the advanced certificate after earning an additional 30 CML credits – including at least one training in the diversity, equity, and inclusion competency area – and demonstrating community service. He earned the first step, the Certificate of Municipal Leadership, requiring 30 credits in 2023.
Councilmember McIrvin is serving his third term on the Renton City Council. He currently serves as the Chair of the Transportation/Aviation Committee and Vice Chair of Planning & Development Committee. He continues his service on regional boards and committees including the Affordable Housing Committee, Eastrail Regional Advisory Council, Growth Management Planning Council, RRFA Governance Board, Regional Transit Committee, and WRIA 8 – Salmon Recovery Council.
“I am very proud to join a majority of my colleagues up on the dais who’ve earned this recognition,” said Councilmember McIrvin.
Councilmember McIrvin is the fourth member of the council to earn an Advanced Certificate, joining Ruth Pérez (2019), Valerie O’Halloran (2022), and Ed Prince (2023). Mayor Armondo Pavone (2023) and Councilmember Kim-Khánh Văn (2022) also hold advanced certificates.
He and his wife, Stefanie, reside in Renton's Cascade Neighborhood with their two daughters, Molly and Lena.
