Renton Airport opens new admin office and launches major upgrades
Published on November 21, 2025
City staff, leadership, and the Renton airport community came together to celebrate the completion of the Renton Municipal Airport’s new administrative offices and upgrades, coinciding with the airport’s 100th anniversary.
The new space marked a major milestone for the airport, with the relocation of administrative space from the Airport Control Tower to a new, inviting, and functional environment, enhancing the experience for both employees and visitors.
At the ribbon cutting, Mayor Armondo Pavone emphasized, “It can’t be overstated the importance aviation has played to the development of our region, and it will continue to in the future.”
A century of service and regional impact
Founded over 100 years ago, Renton Municipal Airport, also known as Clayton Scott Field, has been a cornerstone of the local economy and community.
The airport supports nearly 140,000 operations annually, representing approximately 20% of Washington state’s total general aviation activities. Renton is one of just three airports in the United States to offer both land and sea operations.
The airport owes its secondary name to Clayton Scott, a legendary aviator, personal pilot to Bill Boeing, and a Renton business owner for over 50 years.
Supporting airport operations and improvements to public access
In addition to the new administrative building, the city has invested in several projects to enhance airport operations and public access. Key improvements include the repaving of Taxiway A (Alpha) and the expansion of parking facilities, making it easier for pilots and visitors to experience Renton.
Ongoing upgrades and improvements will continue through summer 2027. City staff has secured grants totaling a remarkable $18 million of federal funding to underwrite these improvements to benefit Renton’s continued economic growth.
Located on the airport’s southwest corner, the new office is part of a larger strategy to protect and modernize critical infrastructure for Renton’s future.
Looking forward: Innovation for the next 100 years
The City of Renton is committed to continued innovation and expansion at the Renton Municipal Airport, including the use of EV charging stations for both aircraft and vehicles, investments in a new, state-of-the-art control tower, and enhancements to the seaplane base.
As the city plans for Renton Airport to serve the community for another century, these investments in Renton’s future will prepare us for continued growth as a city.
