Since 2010, the City of Renton has partnered with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other local partners to celebrate National Day of Service.

The National Day of Service is an annual opportunity for communities across the country to come together in meaningful acts of volunteerism, working side by side to strengthen neighborhoods and support local needs in honor of the many individuals impacted by September 11th. This year marks 25 years since the attack on the World Trade Center.

On Saturday, September 12, the community gathered to make a difference at multiple service project locations across Renton. In total, 325 volunteers with 13 agencies worked together to give back!

MAKING IMPROVEMENTS TO HERITAGE PARK

With over 30 parks covering more than 1,250 acres of land, maintaining all of our park space takes a lot of work. On Saturday, our volunteers at Heritage Park removed 12 yards (3 truck-loads) of invasive blackberry bushes and other overgrowth. Volunteers also worked in the rock wall playground area and spread 30 yards of play chips.

PROTECTING OUR STORMWATER

When it rains, stormwater flows down our streets and sidewalks and eventually reaches our streams, the Cedar River, and the Puget Sound. To remind us of the importance of clean stormwater, storm drain markers can be found throughout the city near certain storm drains that say, “Puget Sound Starts Here. ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN.”

At the Talbot Hill, Victoria Hills, and La Rosa neighborhoods, volunteers installed 35 drain markers. They also distributed doorhangers to nearby residents, emphasizing the importance of stormwater management.

At Thomas Teasdale Park, volunteers gave our activity building a much-needed paint job.

Thank you WestCoast Painting and Sherwin-Williams for providing the supplies!

CLEANUP AND CELEBRATING A JOB WELL DONE

At Liberty Park and Cedar River Park, our volunteers helped set up the celebration picnic and picked up litter. The service projects were followed by a picnic at Liberty Park where Mayor Armondo Pavone thanked the volunteers for their hard work.
