If you didn’t already know, the world’s game is coming to our region, and Renton will play a unique role in the games beginning next week.

We've been preparing our city with spaces such as Legacy Square and Piazza Park to host summer events, and with new spaces and incoming visitors, safety and security remain our top priority.

OUR ROLE DURING FIFA

The City will have two roles during this global event.

We are fortunate enough to have the Seattle Sounders FC headquartered in Renton. During the games, the Seattle Sounders will host Team Belgium to practice at their facility between matches.

Our Renton Police Department will support the team staying in Renton throughout their travels to, from, and during their practices. However, RPD’s daily patrols will continue as expected -- and regular calls for service will not be impacted.

Dedicated staff, supported by a grant from FIFA, will focus on supporting efforts during the tournament, and will be supplemented by an interlocal agreement with Kent PD and Tukwila PD, who will assist our police department with security and police services.

LEGACY SQUARE SCREEN

The screen, measuring 26 feet by 15 feet, is located on the Legacy Square stage and performance shell, crafted from mass timber. The screen is protected by several metal enclosures when not in use. The screen is also made from 80 individual panels which can be replaced if needed.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY & TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Logan Avenue South, the road between Legacy Square and Piazza Park, is closed until October 2. This will allow pedestrians to move between spaces safely and freely, and vehicle detours are available one street over – on Morris Avenue to the west and Burnett Avenue to the east.

We’ve also added jersey barriers, bollards, and other features around Legacy Square to enhance crowd safety.

COMMUNITY SPACE

In addition to the safety measures above, Renton Police Department will have security at Legacy Square for all soccer watch parties, concerts, movie nights, and other events. New security cameras are also in place.

PARKING & GETTING AROUND

City Center Parking Garage has 411 non-commuter stalls offering free 10-hour parking for visitors. Pacific Security provides security for the garage seven days a week.

PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES

Last year, the Renton Emergency Management Division, Renton Police Department, Renton Regional Fire Authority, and Renton Parks & Recreation, Executive Services Department, and dedicated volunteers took part in a citywide emergency exercise.

See how trainings like these make us better prepared for any real-life incidents.

GENERAL SAFETY

Keeping our residents safe during a major event takes all of us coming together. While we have been preparing, we have also been partnering with several regional and federal agencies to ensure we all stay safe and have fun!

Our Partners and their resources

  • King County 9-1-1: King County 9-1-1 has prepared materials to inform international visitors how to use 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. Find their resources at https://911info.wa.gov/fifa.html
  • FEMA: Download the FEMA app to access a list of resources to protect visitors, communities and event spaces.
  • See Something Say Something: "If You See Something, Say Something®" is a national campaign that raises public awareness of the signs of terrorism and terrorism-related crime, and how to report suspicious activity to state and local law enforcement.
  • No Drone Zones: Throughout the tournament, drone use will be limited in certain areas in our region and specifically in Renton. Learn more about these limitations from the Federal Aviation Adminstration (FAA).
  • Human Trafficking: The City of Seattle in partnership with Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) have been preparing for this event for the last year with increased trainings, response plans, and prevention tactics. Do your part and know what to look for when it comes to human trafficking.

Safety reminders:

  • For life threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1 right away.
  • For non-emergencies, you can call the non-emergency Police phone number at 425-235-2121 or report issues through Renton Responds.
  • If there is an emergency in our city, updates will be communicated on our emergency information page on the city website. Along with on oursocial channels.
  • Sign up for ALERT Renton. ALERT Renton is a voluntary emergency notification system to receive critical emergency information via phone or TDD, text, or email.
  • Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything valuable or in plain sight.
  • Stay vigilant of your surroundings especially in large crowds and around banks, stores, and streets.
  • Carry credit cards and checks instead of cash and keep your belongings in front pockets or bags or purses in front of you to avoid pickpockets.
  • Be aware of scams! The FBI has made a statement warning residents about spoofed FIFA websites selling tickets. Avoid sponsored ads and go directly through fifa.com.
