Investing in Renton's Future Workforce TWIR

The City of Renton held its first-ever Workforce Development Month celebration on Monday with a reception and a proclamation during the city council meeting

The proclamation was accepted by Executive Director of the Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnership, Wade Parrott III, on behalf of Renton Technical College.

Workforce Development Month, celebrated nationally, raises awareness about the importance of the workforce industry to a modern and growing economy. This month, we’re honoring the people, programs, and partnerships driving opportunity and economic mobility in Renton.

Here are just some of the organizations in Renton making investments to Renton’s workforce:

  • Renton Technical College (RTC): RTC provides short- and long-term career programs, apprenticeships, transfer options, and degrees in many areas.
  • Renton School District (RSD): RSD’s Career and Technical Education program works with the city and local partners to help students explore careers and build transferable skills.

  • Local Businesses: Large corporations like Boeing and Walker’s Renton Subaru have employed student interns. Smaller businesses play their part too, committing to job shadow programs and hands on training.

To further support Renton’s workforce development, RTC and RSD have partnered to form the Renton Promise. Since 2023, this program has provided graduates of Renton’s four public high schools with full RTC tuition and fees for up to two years. This support has been available to all students, regardless of GPA, income, ability, or country of birth.

Thank you to all of our community partners who continue to strengthen Renton's growing workforce.

Last chance to give feedback on Neighborhood Scale Retail

Originally published in This Week in Renton on August 1, the City of Renton is exploring ways to bring small-scale businesses into residential neighborhoods, making it easier for residents to access everyday goods and services. This might include having a coffee shop, small eatery, or even a neighborhood corner store in your community.

Share your thoughts with the Community & Economic Development Department by taking a quick three-question survey and one-question poll by the end of September.

As of September 19, we have had:

  • 444 responses to the three-question survey
  • 150 responses to the one-question poll
