In Cased You Missed It Renton Council and Committee of the Whole recap

In case you missed Monday’s Committee of the Whole (COW) or Council meeting, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick recap of the conversations shaping our community.

Committee of the Whole Recap

The council received an update from the Community and Economic Development (CED) Department on its Long-Range Planning efforts. In the City’s Planning Division, this team focuses on future growth and long-term planning for the city. Their efforts include zoning, land use, and development code regulations. Their work ensures alignment with state legislation and is guided by the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The team highlighted several ongoing community planning efforts. Plans reviewed included the City Center, Benson Hill, and Valley Community Plan. Updates to the Valley Plan are the division’s current top priority and will support the Valley’s significant employment growth driven by the Sounders FC, Alaska Airlines, and the future Seattle Children’s campus.

Initiatives completed over the last few years were reviewed, including Neighborhood Retail, updating codes for childcare centers, indoor recreation, and advancing funding for housing projects

Council Meeting Recap

The July 13 City Council meeting began with a proclamation recognizing Disability Pride Month.

During the audience comment portion of the meeting, Council heard comments on the use of ALPR cameras, the change in Coulon Beach Park boat launch hours, Robert’s Rules of Order, the Bloomberg Harvard grant agreement for a limited-term management analyst position purpose, and moratoriums on data centers.

Parks and Recreation Department Administrator Maryjane Van Cleave explained the recent temporary change in Coulon boat launch hours was made due to immediate safety concerns related to late-night activity. Van Cleave shared the city is considering alternatives for boat launch users, such as hiring security and installing automatic gate readers.

The meeting continued with several approved motions out of Planning & Development and Finance. These motions included:

  • Authorization to transfer property rights of King County Parcel to Renton Housing Authority, clarifying the Renton Housing Authority owns King County Parcel No. 7227801055
  • Execution of the 2025 Audit Engagement Letter with the Office of Washington State Auditor
  • Sales tax on the Renton Market and Piazza Park construction
  • Adoption of the 2nd Quarter Budget adjustment ordinance
  • Proposed increases to incentives for lateral Police Officer recruitment
  • Maintenance agreement with WSDOT

Resolution 4549 was adopted by the council affirming its commitment to LGBTQIAs+ protections in Renton.

The second quarter 2025/2026 biennial budget adjustment was approved to move forward with the second and final reading at the next council meeting.

The next Renton City Council meeting will be held on Monday, July 20. Topics for discussion include addressing gun violence, the I-405 Renton to Bellevue Ripley Lane Closure, and utility easement release.
