In case you missed Monday’s Committee of the Whole (COW) or Council meeting, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick recap of the conversations shaping our community.
Committee of the Whole Recap
Council received an update from the Parks and Recreation and Public Works Department on the ongoing upgrades underway at the Don Persson Renton Senior Activity Center.
During construction, senior programming has successfully transitioned to the Renton Community Center, where participation remains strong and some activities have even grown thanks to additional space.
The closure is allowing both grant‑funded and city‑funded improvements, including roof replacement, HVAC system upgrades, and exterior improvements like new paint, siding, window replacements, and a seismic evaluation. While most roofing and HVAC work is expected to finish in September, federal grant rules require certain materials to come from approved U.S. vendors. The city must secure a federal waiver to proceed with certain materials that are not within The Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) requirements.
It was discussed that the waiver approval process can take anywhere between one and five months. It was in the design phase that staff confirmed which materials required a waiver because they can’t be sourced domestically.
This process has extended the project timeline to late 2026 or early 2027.
These improvements are an investment in the future of this important community space and will help ensure our active senior community stays comfortable and safe for years to come.
The July 27 City Council meeting began with the audience comment portion of the meeting. Council heard comments on a rugby facility at Ron Regis Park, several comments in support of the Tobin Street vacation along with a concern about mobility access, several concerns about ICE, ALPR cameras, data centers, and legislation for use of public spaces, and also an appreciation of Renton River Days celebrated over the weekend.
The meeting continued with several approved items out of the Finance and Planning & Development Committees. Items included approval of vouchers, interagency agreements, grant agreements, an agreement for temporary supportive housing, future redevelopment of the downtown transit center, and updates to existing codes and rezoning for childcare centers and urban design regulations.
Finally, the council approved the second and final reading for the release of an easement at St. Anthony’s School.
The next Renton City Council meeting will be held on Monday, August 3. Topics for discussion include an update on 2027-2032 Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program, I-405 Renton to Bellevue closure of Houser Way North, and final approval on the 403 Street Vacation.
