VISION 2050 Award at council meeting with Renton mayor, council, city staff, and PRSC

RENTON, WA (October 14, 2025) – The City of Renton proudly received a VISION 2050 Award from the Puget Sound Regional Council for the Rainier/Grady Junction Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Planned Action Ordinance (PAO).

The city's proactive planning efforts in the Rainier / Grady Junction TOD planning area will result in housing and other development around the future transit center, including employment opportunities, retail spaces, and recreational amenities. Both the EIS and PAO introduced a more streamlined review process for developers.

Throughout the process, the project evaluated a range of options to improve connectivity, safety, and mobility, while minimizing environmental impacts and supporting growth. By engaging with stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and communities, including hosting three developer forums as part of public outreach, the project balances technical feasibility with environmental benefit and public input.

The Rainier/Grady Junction EIS and PAO outlines a plan for the redevelopment of the area surrounding the Renton Transit Center, including bus rapid transit (BRT) service to support transit-oriented growth.

“The Rainier/Grady Junction Transit-Oriented Development is an example of our city’s commitment to smart long-range planning to welcome growth and accommodate housing density. Projects like this give better access to transit options and increase walkability and livability here in Renton.

Our planning staff’s efforts to streamline and clarify the permitting process means there is a predictable path forward for developers and careful consideration of the environmental and economic impact of large-scale projects like this. We appreciate the recognition of the Puget Sound Regional Council for the innovative approach from our Community and Economic Development team.” - Mayor Armondo Pavone, City of Renton.

“The Rainier/Grady Junction EIS and PAO project is a strong example of thoughtful, forward-looking planning. This effort reflects a commitment to community engagement, environmental responsibility and regional connectivity. It represents meaningful progress toward a thriving district with access to transit, affordable housing, employment opportunities and recreation space.” - Josh Brown, Executive Director of Puget Sound Regional Council.

The VISION 2050 Awards celebrate progress that enhances the region’s communities and natural environment while advancing equity and opportunity for all. The awards recognize innovative work in the region to create a better future for central Puget Sound.

The award was presented at the Renton City Council meeting on Monday, October 13.
