HAWK Signals

HAWK signals stand for High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk (HAWK). These beacon signals are tools to help make it easier and safer for people to cross busy streets without impeding traffic.

The city currently has seven HAWK signals in various areas including:

  1. Renton Ave.
  2. Monster Rd
  3. Duvall at 10th
  4. Duvall at 12th
  5. NE 4th
  6. Rainier
  7. 2nd Rainier

Pedestrians can activate the HAWK signal by pushing the button at either end of the crossing. The lights on the HAWK signal will indicate when it is safe to cross. Even with the HAWK signal, it is still important for pedestrians to stay focused and be cautious of potential conflicts with vehicles. Drivers making right or left turns across the crosswalk might not always notice pedestrians.

How HAWK signals work:

For drivers:

  • Vehicles are free to move when no one is crossing the street or lights are not flashing.
  • Flashing YELLOW means prepare to stop.
  • SOLID RED means all cars in all directions are required to stop.
  • ALTERNATING RED flashing means each car is required to stop but can proceed when crosswalks are clear of pedestrians.
  • DARK (no flashing lights) proceed as normal.

Pedestrians:

  • Pedestrians need to push the button to activate traffic signals at either end of the crossing and should not cross without pushing the button and can see the flashing red lights.
