Recycling Collection Events

Each year, the City of Renton holds small recycling collection events open to all residents.  All events are held at the Renton Technical College (NE 6th Place and Monroe Ave NE) Parking Lot 3 between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Saturday, May 16:

Items accepted at this event include:

  • Scrap metal and appliances
  • Styrofoam blocks and peanuts
  • Plastic bags and bubble wrap
  • Donation opportunity: Arts and crafts supplies

Saturday, June 6:

Items accepted at this event include:

  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Cardboard
  • Styrofoam blocks and peanuts
  • Plastic bags and bubble wrap
  • Tires: Car, pickup truck, and motorcycle
  • Donation opportunity: Used furniture (see event flyer(PDF, 919KB) to complete the required online application)

Saturday, September 12:

Items accepted at this event include:

  • Documents for shredding
  • Styrofoam blocks and peanuts
  • Plastic bags and bubble wrap
  • Donation opportunity: Non-perishable food for donation to the food bank

Repair Events

At repair events, residents may bring their small household and personal items for repair by skilled volunteers.  Items should be small enough to be carried by one person and may include such items as electronics, small furniture, and clothing.  Please visit the King County Repair Events page for more information on this event and other King County-sponsored repair events.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Household Hazardous Waste Program of King County offers household hazardous waste drop-off service for a variety of household hazardous wastes at several locations throughout King County.  The service is free to all King County residents and no appointment is necessary.  For more information on drop-off sites, operating hours, and accepted materials, please visit the HHW Program website.

Household Battery Drop-off Locations

You can drop-off your spent alkaline, rechargeable, NiMH, lithium-ion, and carbon-zinc batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9-volt, button cell) for free at three locations in Renton: 

  • Renton City Hall (1055 S. Grady Way) – Main Lobby
  • Renton Community Center (1715 Maple Valley Hwy) – Ask for assistance at customer service desk
  • Renton Senior Center (211 Burnett Ave. N.) 

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and Tubes

Compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes contain mercury and should not be thrown in the garbage.  Residents and businesses can drop off up to ten bulbs and ten tubes per vehicle per day at King County's Bow Lake and Factoria transfer stations. The service is free and available to all residents.  Broken bulbs and tubes must be sealed in a bag or a box.  Incandescent, halogen, and LED bulbs and tubes are not accepted.

E-Cycle Washington

E-Cycle Washington is a product stewardship program that collects desktop/laptop computers, computer monitors, televisions, and tablets, e-readers, and portable DVD players.

Safe Medicine Return

Dispose of medications safely when they are no longer needed to prevent accidental ingestion or misuse by others. Do not place medicine in the trash or recycling and never flush them down the sink or toilet. Paint Recycling

PaintCare is a product stewardship program that collects house paint as well as primers, stains, sealers, and clear coatings such as shellac and varnish.  There is no cost to residents at collection sites to drop-off these materials.  For more information on the program, accepted materials, and to find a drop-off site near you, please visit the PaintCare website

 

Motor Oil Recycling

Recycling used motor oil and filters is easy in Renton. All the city’s auto parts stores take back used motor oil and filters at no cost. The oil collected by these stores is recycled into re-refined oil or burned as bunker fuel.

For Oil: Drain the oil into a clean, reusable container and bring it to any of the following locations during their business hours. Small quantities only - most stores will accept up to five gallons at a time.

For Filters: Drain the filter for 24 hours and collect the oil for recycling. Bring your used filter (metal filters only) to any of the following locations during their business hours.

Holiday Tree Collection

During the first two full weeks of each year holiday trees will be collected at no additional cost from Renton residents.

  • Single family home residents may place out their old holiday trees for collection at the curb on their regular yard waste collection day. 
  • Apartment and condo residents can place out their trees for collection at their outdoor trash enclosures on their regular garbage collection day (Check with your property manager)
  • Trees taller than 6 feet in length should be cut in half.
  • Trees should be unflocked and free of tinsel, ornaments, and lights.
