What businesses are impacted by the business license threshold?

Out-of-city businesses licensed with City of Renton. Business located in the city are not impacted by the business license threshold.

What if I'm an out-of-city business under the $4,000 business license threshold?

Out-of-city businesses under the threshold are still required to obtain a City of Renton business license, but there is no license fee charged.

What is considered an out-of-city business?

A business that performs activities in Renton and does not have a physical brick and mortar location within Renton city limits.

How do I apply for a City of Renton business license?

Applications can be submitted two ways - online or hardcopy.

If I am registered with the State of Washington Department of Revenue, do I still need a City of Renton business license?

Yes. If you are registered with the State of Washington Department of Revenue, you are still obligated to register and obtain a license with the city. City of Renton business license requirements are in addition to any state and other jurisdictional requirements.

Does Renton offer a license fee exemption for nonprofit businesses?

Yes. Business license fees are exempt for organizations with a 501(c)3 nonprofit designation from the IRS.

When does my business license expire?

The General Business License expires on January 31 of every year. If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, then the due date shall fall to the next business day.

Will I get a reminder to renew my license?

A renewal notice will be sent early to mid-December to the mailing address on the Tax & Licensing account.

What happens if my gross income changes and I owe a license fee?

Pay the correct license fee and notify our office so that we may adjust your account.

How do I get a copy of my business license certificate?

You may print your business license certificate online at FileLocal. We also mail business license certificates once a week after the processing of your business license payment.

How do I make updates to my account for an address change or business closure?

If my legal entity changes, will I need a new license?

Yes. A change of legal entity requires a new license to be issued.

 

Business and Occupation (B&O)

What is the definition of Gross Income?

Gross Income is the worldwide business income from activity both within and outside the City of Renton, regardless of your business's physical location.

Do I need to file a tax return?

Yes. All businesses with an active business license need to file a tax return based on the frequency of your account. If no business was conducted in the City of Renton, you can file a No Business Return.

What is the reporting threshold for B&O tax?

Businesses are subject to the B&O tax if the annual Renton taxable revenue is above $500,000.

How do I amend a tax return?

Tax forms CANNOT be amended on FileLocal. Please contact the Tax & Licensing division for information on how to amend tax return forms.
