This Week in Renton Pride Flag raising at city hall

All are welcome! Join the city’s 5th Pride Flag Raising event on Monday, June 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Renton City Hall’s upper parking lot.

Join Mayor Pavone, Renton City Council, and the community as Renton Pride’s Vice President Winter Cashman raises the Pride Flag. Light bites and refreshments will be provided.

After the flag raising, join us for a Pride Month proclamation during the council meeting at 7 p.m. in the 7th Floor Council Chambers.

Leading up to Pride Month, the city reached out to the LGBTQ+ community members to better understand their experiences in Renton. The feedback is helping shape the city’s Inclusive City Campaign, an initiative focused on making Renton a welcoming and inclusive place for all.

Three-week closure of Burnett Avenue South and Smithers Avenue South at South Seventh Street/Talbot Road South

Burnett Avenue South and Smithers Avenue South — at the South Seventh Street & Talbot Road South intersection — will be closed from June 3 to June 24. This closure is near the backside of Brown Bear car wash.

Crews will be building a raised concrete trail crossing on Burnett Avenue South and modifying Smithers Avenue South so drivers can only exit south onto Talbot Road South. This will help make the future multi-use trail on Smithers Avenue South safer and is a part of the South Seventh Street Corridor Improvements Project.

Alternate routes around the closures include Shattuck Avenue South, Morris Avenue South, Williams Avenue South, and Wells Avenue South.

This closure is part of the South Seventh Street Corridor Improvements project to help make South Seventh Street into a key east-west bicycle route into downtown.

Since construction began in March, crews have:

  • Constructed sidewalk along northside of South Seventh Street from Smithers Avenue South to Shattuck Avenue South.
  • Installed bicycle video detection at four traffic signals
  • Revised stormwater system and abandoned old clay storm pipe
  • Installed irrigation and fiber optic sleeving
  • Installed pole foundations

Once complete, the area will include new sidewalks, a two-way cycle track, and safety features like signage and other high-visibility technology. These improvements will also provide important non-motorized access to the new Sound Transit BRT station and the existing WSDOT Park and Ride at South Seventh Street and Shattuck Avenue South.
