Celebrating Renton’s volunteers for National Volunteer Month
Published on April 17, 2026
Whether planting trees, supporting community events, or keeping your neighborhood safe, volunteering is one of the most joyful ways to connect with your neighbors and make a positive impact on Renton’s community.
During the April 6, 2026, council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated April 2026 as National Volunteer Month. Accepting the proclamation was City of Renton Volunteer Coordinator Teresa Nishi, alongside volunteers Jennetta Edwards and Jessica Lauer.
Nishi thanked Mayor Pavone and the City Council for recognizing the almost 900 individuals who volunteered for the City of Renton in 2025, and mentioned the city’s appreciation for volunteers – we could not do the amount of programs and events without our volunteers.

What differences do volunteers make?
Across the City of Renton, volunteers strengthen our community through coaching, maintaining our park environment, public safety efforts, disaster prep and more.
Earlier this month, the Parks & Recreation Department shared a snapshot on social media on how volunteers support their programs:
- Nearly 125 coaches for Youth Sports
- 80-90 community members volunteer with Renton Farmers Market
- Last year, 495 individuals volunteered for a total of 1370 hours of parks maintenance and care
- And more!
Next week, volunteers will celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees and marking storm drains at and around Thomas Teasdale Park.
In addition to the Parks and Recreation Department, our other city departments offer volunteer programs:

Boards, committees, and commissions are volunteer groups that advise city leaders on policies, plans, and issues. Their input is important in the city’s decision-making process, providing a wider array of perspectives. Find a list of all our current boards, committees, and commissions, and current openings for volunteer roles on our website.

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner: Thank you, volunteers!
For the many volunteers that serve the Renton community, we express our appreciation and thanks through the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. This year’s event took place at Renton Technical College and centered around the theme “Let’s Taco about how much we appreciate you.” The event was organized by the City of Renton Parks & Recreation Department.
