Did you know that the Public Works Department is our largest department? From the roads to the sky and (literally) the water in-between, our Public Works team protects community health and safety by maintaining city infrastructure.

During last Monday's city council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated May 17-23 as National Public Works Week. The proclamation was accepted by Facilities Director, Jeff Minisci and several other Public Works Department staff. Minisci emphasized, “The Public Works team isn’t just one role; it’s engineers, maintenance crews, custodians, project managers, technicians, and many others working together behind the scenes.”

What does Public Works do?

The Public Works Department is made of over 200 staff members across six divisions on call 24/7 and ready to respond to emergencies.

Here’s a very quick snapshot of what each division does:

  • Facilities: This team maintains your favorite Renton facilities including theaters, recreation and neighborhood centers, Henry Moses Aquatic Center, and more!
  • Maintenance: Streets, sidewalks, bridges, oh my! This is the team you are most likely to see, often working on potholes, brush cutting, roadside debris, and more.
  • Renton Municipal Airport: Working with the Renton Boeing Plant, and offering many airport services, the airport has been helping our city ‘take off’ for decades!
  • Sustainability & Solid Waste: This team brings resources and services to help you manage waste in an environmentally friendly way. It’ll also help you save money!
  • Transportation:  This team helps people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout Renton with new roads, traffic calming measures, streetlights, traffic signals, bike lanes, and more! (Have you taken the Safety Action Plan survey yet?)
  • Utility Systems: Do you use water? This team protects and maintains our drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems throughout Renton.

Thank you, Public Works!
