In Cased You Missed It Renton Council and Committee of the Whole recap

In case you missed last night’s Committee of the Whole (COW) or Council meeting, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick recap of the conversations shaping our community.

Committee of the Whole Recap

The Committee of the Whole recapped the 2026 Legislative Session and discussed art installation concepts for the soon-to-launch Legacy Square project downtown.

2026 Legislative Session Recap

The legislative session started on January 12 and ended on March 12. We focused our efforts on four priorities:

  • Public Defense
  • Transportation and Regional Connectivity
  • Public Safety
  • Shared Revenues

Find a breakdown explaining these priorities on our website.

As part of the overall state budget, we secured funding for the Renton Resource Center and SE 168th Street Bike Lanes/Safe Crossings.

The state legislature passed new regulations and investments for public safety. We were successful in preserving most state-shared revenues and expanding local revenue flexibilities.

No new funding or policies were set for public defense during this session. We will continue to push for these necessary resources.

Transportation remains a priority for us. As our community grows, access to reliable transportation must grow with it. We will continue to advocate strongly for transportation projects and funding that deliver real benefits to our community.

Legacy Square Art Installation

Council then reviewed two proposed art pieces for Legacy Square. Urban Artworks was selected for the project, and two artists created two mural designs—one for the stage doors and another for the concrete wall on the church next door.

Council Meeting Recap

The council meeting kicked off with two proclamations. The city recognized Arbor Day / Earth Day and Courts Personnel Appreciation. There was one public comment expressing their gratitude for acknowledging Courts Personnel Appreciation with a proclamation.

The council adopted an ordinance to vacate an unopened right-of-way, East of 158th AVE SE and South of NE 128th St for Renton Regional Fire Authority.

Looking ahead, the April 27 meetings will cover topics such as summer events, Legacy Square updates, Arts & Culture Master Plan Update, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Master Plan Update.
