In Cased You Missed It Renton Council and Committee of the Whole recap

In case you missed last night’s Committee of the Whole (COW) or Council meeting, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick recap of the conversations shaping our community.

Committee of the Whole Recap

The Committee of the Whole spent the meeting covering transportation planning. This includes plans for managing congestion, our walkway investments, and the steps it takes to preserve the streets we rely on.

The meeting began with a focus on how we plan for the future, especially when it comes to modernizing our signal systems. Renton’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Smart Mobility Master Plan are the basis for reliable city signal systems to reduce congestion and enhance safety. By using better data and adding tools like remote access, stronger network security, and new firewalls, we can respond more quickly to issues and emergencies. As we continue to grow, the plan outlines upgrades such as new traffic signals, adaptive signal control, improved communication systems, upgraded fiber, and enhanced staff tools to manage a more advanced and efficient transportation network.

Next, the presentation shifted to sidewalks. We discussed how we prioritize walkway investments to ensure people can move safely throughout the city.

We also reviewed our pavement management strategy and how we maintain our entire roadway system.  That includes slurry seal work to prolong the lifespan of roads, curb ramp upgrades, and roadway overlays to keep streets accessible and drivable.

Council Meeting Recap

The council meeting kicked off with a proclamation recognizing the city’s Administrative Professionals. There were public comments regarding FLOCK cameras, a comment about reconsidering term limits on elected positions, and kudos on the safety and pavement improvements underway along Oakesdale Avenue (soon to be completed, check out the project page for updates!)

Council adopted interlocal agreements with City of Auburn and City of Federal Way police departments to support the Renton Police Department during the World Cup this summer, 2025-2026 City of Renton Fee Schedule, and the vacation of the unopened right-of-way, East of 158th AVE SE and South of NE 128th St for Renton Regional Fire Authority.

Council also advanced one ordinance for final approval on May 4. The ordinance updates job positions, position changes, and the 2026 salary table as part of the City of Renton’s 2025–2026 budget.

Looking ahead, the May 4 meetings will cover topics such as Renton Parks and Recreation summer events, 2026-2027 Re+ City Grant, and Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) Policy.
