May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to highlight the contributions of AANHPI communities across the United States. The month celebrates dozens of diverse nations with distinct cultures and histories.

During last Monday's city council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated May 2026, as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Renton. Equity Commissioner Manami Imaoka accepted the proclamation, noting the diversity within the AANHPI community. Imaoka shared her personal journey to Renton and highlighted what brings the community together, sharing that no matter their background, they all call Renton home.

AANHPI in the community

Renton’s AANHPI community is reflected in our city’s leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, healthcare organizations, schools, and neighborhoods.

More than 1 in 4 residents identify as AANHPI, and this diversity is reflected in the many languages spoken throughout our city, with Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Korean among the most spoken foreign languages.

Throughout Renton, AANHPI-owned businesses help shape our city’s culture and community. Check out some of these local small businesses on our YouTube channel and find your next place to explore with the Visit Renton app.
