Recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month
Published on April 24, 2026
Every 68 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. Sexual violence impacts everyone, but together as a community, we can help alleviate the trauma it causes.
During the April 13, 2026 council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Accepting the proclamation was CEO of King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) Kate Garvey.
Garvey addressed survivors in the community, “I want to say to you clearly. You are not alone. Sexual assault is far more common than people realize. Half of women and one-third of men will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. And for people from marginalized communities, whether due to disability, sexual identity, gender, race, or identity, the risk is even greater.”
We value our neighbors from KCSARC and the many services and resources they provide for Renton. Their mission is to give voice to victims, their families, and communities; create change in beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors about sexual violence; and instill courage for people to speak out about sexual assault.
Experienced a sexual assault? KCSARC provides free, confidential support through trained advocates available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at their resource line: 888-998-6423. More details and additional language options are available on their website.
