RENTON, WA (SEPTEMBER 10, 2025) –– The City of Renton's Finance Department received the State Auditor's Stewardship Award (SASA) from the Washington State Auditor's Office for its outstanding efforts in promoting government accountability and transparency.
During the September 8 council meeting, State Auditor Pat McCarthy, Kelly Collins, Deputy State Auditor, Wendy Choi, Assistant Director of Local Audit, and Paul Griswold, Audit Manager presented the award to the City of Renton’s Finance Department.
In a statement read by State Auditor Pat McCarthy at the Renton City Council meeting on September 8, 2025, the City of Renton Finance Department was recognized for extensive research, complex calculations and projections, and a deep understanding of new accounting standards for fiscal year 2024 in the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
“The Office of the Washington State Auditor recognizes the City of Renton’s dedication to accountability and transparency in government. The city staff and leadership work diligently to hold themselves accountable to those they serve,” said McCarthy.
“When we can recognize those that do a good job, it's an honor. The city consistently dedicates the necessary time and resources to prioritize the audit, which results in a smooth and efficient process...that's indicative of a high performing organization. The city's commitment to the audit process, transparency and communication and documentation has created a culture of accountability.”
Several city staff members were directly recognized for excellence in their work, including Finance Administrator Kari Roller, Fiscal Services Director Kristin Trivelas, Budget and Accounting Manager Nate Malone, and Senior Finance Analyst Ariel Llorach, along with the entire City of Renton Finance Department for their collaborative approach to the audit process and dedication to accurate financial reporting.
“It is a great honor to be recognized by the State Auditor's Office with this award, which aligns exactly with our department’s mission of accuracy and transparency. We have 27 hard-working finance professionals who care about this city and love what they do, and it shows when someone outside our department can see the special group we have in Renton," stated Kari Roller, Finance Department Administrator.
Prior to the meeting, a small reception was held for the mayor, city councilmembers, city leadership, the Finance Department and their families, and representatives from the Auditor's Office to celebrate this well-deserved achievement.
Of the award, Mayor Armondo Pavone expressed, “The Finance Department touches everything we do in the City of Renton, and the work they do is vital. Not only do they get it done, but they operate at such a high level that we're being recognized, it really is a testament to the work of Kari Roller, Kristin Trivelas and their entire team.”
Earlier this year, the city’s Finance Department was also received the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association. All three awards highlight the department's focus on clear communication to the public, excellence in reporting and effective budgeting.
